The devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Why five Saturdays?

On Thursday, May 29, 1930, during her holy hour of adoration with the purpose of making reparation, in the chapel of the convent of Tuy where she lived at that time, Sister Lucia received the answer to the questions that her confessor, Father Goncalves, had asked her in writing, in particular the following:

“Why five Saturdays and not nine or seven, in honour of the sorrows of Our Lady?”

“Suddenly, I felt intimately invaded by the divine presence, she said, and, if I am not mistaken [Sister Lucia does not doubt but has a humble and an obedient attitude towards her spiritual director since she wishes to show that she submits entirely to his judgement], this is what was revealed to me:”

“My daughter, the reason is simple. There are five types of offences and blasphemies committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary:

1. Blasphemies against the Immaculate Conception.

2. Blasphemies against her Virginity.

3. Blasphemies against her Divine Maternity, in refusing at the same time to recognize her as the Mother of men.

4. The blasphemies of those who publicly seek to sow in the hearts of children indifference or scorn, or even hatred of this Immaculate Mother.

5. The offences of those who outrage her directly in her holy images.”

“Here, my daughter, is the reason why the Immaculate Heart of Mary inspired me to ask for this little act of reparation, and, in consideration of it, to move my mercy to forgive the souls who had the misfortune to offend her.”
